Bought a "new" Spider. Veloce, 1991, 55K original miles. It's been almost 2 years since my last Alfa. I had needed a daily commuter before and had to sell my '91, but now this is just a fun beach car - just moved down to Charleston SC (LOVE it here). Already I've done quite a bit, and there's a to-do list accumulating. I put in a new water pump, tune-up, re-torque, detail, and repaired some vaccum leaks. It has the typical motor mount wear. The manual is not very informative on the auto trans mount. Overall, the car feels good, with a few noises and groans to locate. A sheared wire to the AC electro-coupling/clutch. I like the auto trans, actually. Just some basic little sorting out to do on this car - and I know it'll take a while. I'm sure you'll all be hearing from me - I am, and will always be Alfa sick. It's been fun going over the car with many of the tips and tricks I've learned from many of you. It's good to be back!

Hi All,

My '92 164S came with no manuals so, suffice to say that this board has been a tremendous help to this first-time (and very proud) Alfa owner.

So today I'm cruising down the street and, as I come up to a red light, I press the brake pedal and it goes to the floorboard, providing just barely enough stopping power to halt the car. I immediately pull in to a nearby 7-11 to get off the road and check out the problem. While in the parking lot, I pump the brakes and about 70% of the stopping power returns.

I go in and buy some brake fluid and then open the hood with no idea where to put it. So, I figure that since I'm just a little over a mile from home and since pumping the brakes restored a reasonable amount of stopping power, I decided to "limp" home and ask you guys.

Of course, during that short drive, my brakes returned to their normal operating state.

What happened?! What should I check and where exactly is the brake fluid reservoir? I figure the most obvious approach is to check the fluid, but I'm lost without any type of manual.

Thanks a bunch,
Nick

Anyway, I hadn't tracked the car yet and was wondering how it would do.
Only had one session since I didn't really "do" the track day. The Volvo was
a HOOT!!! Nice to finally get it out there. learned a couple of things.
I need a little more tuning on the SU Carbs and the Bilstien sport shocks
are too soft for the track. the car was sooo tossable, I was able to drive it
at 9-10/10 with ease. That went well. I have a guy in the club interested
in buying the car to do vintage racing. We went for a short drive.
Got back and I needed to go home to care for my 3 month old. I needed
to push start the car!!:eek: I could tell the battery was low and the car
wasn't charging. Made 45 tense miles home.. hoping the car wouldn't
konk. A little later I put the battery on the charger and looked under the hood.
Thinking the regulator was bad ( Alt is nearly new). Found one of
the wires came off the alternator.. Easy fix, should have looked under the hood before I left.

I am still trying to get one rather obstinate 86 Grad to run. It seems that some of my problem may be in the main drive relay.

I am still trying to get one rather obstinate 86 Grad to run. It seems that some of my problem may be in the main drive relay. The schematic that I have (Thanks again, Papa Jam!) shows the following terminals on that relay: 31, 31b, 87, 50, 30, 15. The Bosch relay that I pulled out of my Spider shows Bosch #0280230001 and IAP shows that as the correct relay. Here is the problem: that relay shows the following pins: 31, 30, 50, 15, 87b, 87, 1.

Have I confused the life out of everyone at this juncture? Assuming that all of the corresponding numbers hook up to one another, I am left with terminals number 87b and 1 on my relay with no idea where they go. AND, a number 31b on the plug.

Also, can anyone help me with color schematics for my FI system? The one from Papa Jam is in black and white and having the wire colors to trace could prove to be a huge help - or, perhaps someone is knowledgeable enough to tell me what color each wire is that comes off of this relay.

Any help would be MOST appreciated.

I just bought this car, after an extremely untruthful seller..... I should have spent more time looking at it. Unfortunately I don't have the time, $ or storage to work on this one. So, it needs to move on to somebody who has the ability to work on it/use it for parts.
The car is a 164B, cloth interior (I know, big disappointment) however the interior is in great condition, especially with over 178,000 miles!

I'm going to try to be as thorough as possible. I don't like surprises and it's not fair to the next buyer, so bear with me....

The good:
all windows/door handles work
A/C blows ice cold/heater works
Starts and drives everytime
Does not overheat, (warm, it runs at about 210 Degrees)
New Water coolant reservoir
timing belt covers are in perfect condition
Transmission is extremely smooth

The bad:
Car has a significant miss. May be spark/fuel injection/ or possible head gasket, but car runs and drives rather well still.
There is minor anti-freeze leak that drips onto the floor by the gas pedal. (picture shows after 70 miles of driving)
Car is a lien sale, meaning it hasn't been registered since the previous owner bought it from the tow yard. (this just means you have to go to DMV, and not AAA)
Car hasn't been registered since 06.
Rear right passenger door makes loud sound when it locks/unlocks (but still works)
Car will need alignment
dent in drivers side front wheel well
Mediocre paint job (but all the same color)
Broken gas cap (of course!)

Obviously some work needs to be done. I just bought it as a supplement to my 87 spider, something to keep my dry when it rains, or is cold. But this is too much for me right now. Come take it away..... $500/firm!

I'm happy to drive it to you if you'll provide transportation back, or we work out something else. Car is located in Carlsbad, which is northern San Diego, CA area.

I am going from SPICA on a 78 Alfa Spider to carbs. What is the best fuel pump to use? I believe that the bosch pump is way to strong as psi. Any recommendations would be appreciated. thanks!!
